India’s industrial production recorded a marginal increase in October 2025, inching up by 0.4 percent year-on-year, according to provisional figures released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI). The latest Quick Estimate of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), based on the 2011–12 base year, rose to 150.9 in October 2025 from 150.3 in the same month a year earlier.

The modest uptick came despite uneven performance across major industrial sectors. Manufacturing, which forms the largest share of the IIP, grew 1.8 percent compared with October 2024. However, this improvement was counterbalanced by weaker activity in other sectors. Mining output declined by 1.8 percent, while electricity generation saw a sharp 6.9 percent contraction. MOSPI attributed the drop in power output partly to prolonged monsoon conditions and cooler temperatures across multiple states, which suppressed electricity demand.

A closer examination of the manufacturing segment revealed that only 9 of the 23 industry groups at the two-digit classification level posted positive growth. Key drivers included the production of basic metals, refined petroleum products, and motor vehicles — a category that spans auto components, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles.

On the demand side, the performance of user-based categories also displayed mixed trends. Infrastructure and Construction Goods stood out with a strong 7.1 percent annual increase, indicating continued investment momentum. Capital Goods grew by 2.4 percent, while Intermediate Goods recorded a mild 0.9 percent rise. In contrast, Primary Goods dipped 0.6 percent. Consumer-oriented segments remained under pressure, with Consumer Durables declining 0.5 percent and Consumer Non-Durables registering a sharper 4.4 percent fall.

MOSPI reiterated that the current figures are provisional and subject to revision as more data becomes available. The ministry will release the IIP data for November 2025 on December 29.
